What Is Aluminum Stamping?
Aluminum stamping is a cold-forming metalworking process in which aluminum sheet or strip stock is placed in a stamping press and shaped into the desired geometry using a die set. Operations include blanking, piercing, bending, drawing, embossing, coining, lancing, notching, and progressive die forming. Aluminum’s excellent formability in annealed and soft tempers, combined with its light weight (density: 2.71 g/cm³), makes it one of the most widely stamped metals globally. Aluminum stamped parts offer lightweight strength, natural corrosion resistance, electrical and thermal conductivity, and recyclability.

Typical Q&A — Aluminum Stamping and Stamped Parts
1. What aluminum alloy is best for deep drawing stampings?
AA 1100 (commercially pure aluminum) and AA 3003 are the most formable aluminum alloys — ideal for deep drawing of cups, shells, and housings. AA 5052 is used for structural deep-drawn parts requiring higher strength. AA 5754 and AA 5083 are used for automotive deep drawn panels where strength and corrosion resistance are both needed.
2. What is springback in aluminum stamping and how do you control it?
Springback is the elastic recovery (partial return to original shape) that occurs after an aluminum stamped part is removed from the die. Aluminum has a higher springback tendency than steel due to its lower Young’s modulus. We control springback through overbending compensation in die design, coining of bend radii, and iterative tool tryout with CMM measurement.
3. What is the lightest aluminum alloy you can stamp?
All aluminum alloys have density approximately 2.71 g/cm³ — among the lightest structural engineering metals. AA 2024-T3 offers the best strength-to-weight ratio for aerospace applications (428 MPa tensile), while AA 1100 is the softest and most formable for deep drawing applications.
4. What tolerances can you achieve on aluminum stampings?
Standard aluminum stamping tolerance: ±0.1 mm on profile dimensions, ±0.05 mm on hole diameters. Precision stamping: ±0.05 mm profile, ±0.03 mm holes. Aluminum responds differently from steel in die — springback compensation is factored into our die design to achieve these tolerances reliably.
5. What surface finishes are available for aluminum stamped parts?
Available surface finishes: natural / mill finish (as-stamped), Type II anodising (clear, coloured, 5–25 µm), Type III hard anodising (15–50 µm for wear resistance), chromate conversion coating (Alodine / Iridite — MIL-DTL-5541), powder coating, liquid paint, and bead blasting. All surface treatments are performed in-house at Brass Parts India.
6. Can you produce aluminum bus bar stampings?
Yes. We manufacture AA 1350 electrical grade aluminum bus bar stampings — punched, blanked, and bent — for LV distribution boards, switchgear, and solar inverter bus work. We supply with tin plating (for bimetallic contact joints with copper), chromate treatment, or bare with edge deburring.
7. What is the difference between AA 5052 and AA 6061 for stampings?
AA 5052 (AlMg2.5) is an excellent general-purpose marine and structural aluminum with moderate strength and very good corrosion resistance — ideal for stampings where formability and corrosion resistance are both needed. AA 6061-T6 (AlMgSiCu) has higher strength (310 MPa vs 228 MPa) and is heat-treatable, making it better for structural stampings and brackets, but it is less formable than AA 5052 in cold forming.
8. Do you offer anodising for aluminum stamped parts?
Yes. In-house Type II anodising (clear, black, coloured) and Type III hard anodising are available for aluminum stampings. Anodising provides corrosion protection, surface hardness, and decorative finish. We supply anodising certificates with shipments where anodising is specified.
9. What is the minimum aluminum sheet thickness you can stamp?
We can stamp aluminum as thin as 0.08 mm (fin stock for HVAC heat exchangers) using high-speed fin presses. Standard aluminum stampings start from 0.5 mm using conventional progressive and compound dies.
10. Can you stamp AA 2024 aerospace aluminum?
Yes. We stamp AA 2024-T3 for aerospace and defence applications. AA 2024 in T3 temper (solution treated and naturally aged) offers excellent machinability and good formability for non-complex stamps. We supply 2024 stampings with MTC and material traceability per AMS 2750 and aerospace supply chain requirements.
11. What is the lead time for aluminum stamping tooling?
Tooling lead time: 3–4 weeks for new dies (simple to medium complexity aluminum progressive or compound dies). Complex multi-stage deep drawing dies: 4–6 weeks. First article samples provided within 1 week of tooling completion.
12. Do you supply aluminum fin stampings for HVAC heat exchangers?
Yes. We produce aluminum HVAC fin stampings on dedicated coil-fed fin presses at 100–250 SPM. Available fin geometries include flat, corrugated, louvered, slit-and-lanced fins in AA 1100 and AA 3003, with optional hydrophilic or epoxy coating for condensate drainage.
13. Are your aluminum stamped parts RoHS compliant?
Yes. All aluminum alloys we use are RoHS 2 and REACH SVHC compliant. We provide RoHS compliance declarations and REACH SVHC statements with every shipment. Surface treatments (anodising, powder coat, chromate) are also supplied with compliance documentation.
14. Can you supply automotive aluminum stampings with PPAP?
Yes. We prepare PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) documentation per AIAG Level 3 for automotive aluminum stamped parts, including dimensional inspection reports, material certifications, process capability studies (Cp/Cpk), and control plans — supporting our automotive Tier 1 and Tier 2 customers.
15. What is hard anodising and when is it used for aluminum stampings?
Hard anodising (Type III) produces a thick, very hard anodic oxide layer (15–50 µm) on aluminum stampings, significantly improving wear resistance and surface hardness (up to 400–500 HV). It is used for aluminum stampings in harsh wear environments: sliding contacts, wear pads, industrial machinery, and military equipment.
16. Do you supply aluminum stamped parts for solar / renewable energy systems?
Yes. We supply AA 6063 aluminum rail stampings, grounding clip stampings, bracket blanks, and solar panel frame components for solar mounting systems. All supplied with chromate conversion coating or anodising for outdoor corrosion resistance, and with RoHS/REACH compliance documentation.
