What is C95500 Aluminum Bronze (CDA 955)?
C95500 (also called Nickel Aluminum Bronze, NAB, or CDA 955) is a high-strength copper alloy containing 10–11.5% aluminum, 3–5.5% nickel, 3–5% iron, and balance copper. The aluminum forms a tenacious, self-healing aluminum oxide film on the alloy surface that provides exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion, cavitation erosion, biofouling, and most industrial chemicals. The iron and nickel additions refine the microstructure and significantly increase strength, hardness, and wear resistance compared to simpler aluminum bronzes.

A: Both are nickel aluminum bronzes, but C95800 has slightly lower aluminum (8.5–9.5% vs 10–11.5% in C95500) and lower nickel. C95800 is specifically optimized for marine propeller manufacture — its lower aluminum gives better resistance to dealuminification in seawater and slightly better impact toughness at the expense of some tensile strength. C95500 is used for higher-strength structural and bearing applications. Both are excellent materials; the choice depends on the specific application.
Q2: Does C95500 need heat treatment?
A: C95500 can be used in the as-cast condition for many applications, but heat treatment (anneal at 620°C for stress relief, or solution anneal + quench for maximum properties — TQ50 temper per ASTM B148) significantly improves homogeneity, eliminates casting residual stresses, and increases the alloy’s resistance to stress corrosion cracking. For marine propellers and critical pressure-retaining components, we routinely supply in the TQ50 heat-treated condition.
Q3: Can C95500 be welded for repair?
A: Yes. C95500 can be GTAW (TIG) welded for repair of casting defects and field repairs of marine propellers and valve bodies using appropriate NAB filler metal (AWS A5.7 ERCuNiAl). Preheat to 100–150°C; post-weld heat treatment at 620°C is recommended for critical repairs.
