What Is C27450 Brass?

C27450 is a dezincification-resistant, low-lead brass — a high-copper CuZn36-type alloy with lead capped at 0.25% so that its weighted-average lead content meets NSF/ANSI 372 and US “lead-free” plumbing legislation. Its high copper (predominantly alpha) structure, supplied in the DZR-conditioned state, resists the selective leaching of zinc that attacks ordinary brass in soft, acidic or chlorinated waters, while the reduced lead keeps it compliant for drinking-water use. It carries the UNS number C27450 and corresponds to a low-lead CuZn36 (EN CW506L family). Where the highest machining rate is the priority instead, leaded C36000 is faster; where a leaded DZR grade is acceptable, CW602N / CZ132 is the classic choice; and where maximum strength with lead-free dezincification resistance is needed, silicon brass C69300 is the alternative.

Machinability & Fabrication

With lead reduced to trace levels, C27450 does not machine as freely as leaded C36000, but at around 70% machinability it still turns, drills and threads well on CNC and Swiss-type equipment with appropriately adjusted feeds, sharp tooling and good chip control. It has excellent hot and cold formability — it hot-forges and hot-stamps cleanly at 650–750 °C and cold-heads and bends readily — which makes it a practical low-lead substitute for standard yellow-brass forgings and fittings. It accepts nickel, chrome and tin plating.
