Frequently Asked Questions – Stainless Steel Machined Parts

Q1: What is the most machinable stainless steel grade?

A: Grade 303 (EN 1.4305) is the easiest stainless steel to machine, with sulfur additions acting as chip-breakers similar to lead in brass. However, 303 cannot be welded or used in highly corrosive environments. For general machined parts where welding is not required, 303 is our first recommendation. For corrosive or food-grade applications, we use 304 or 316L.

Q2: What is the difference between 304 and 316L for machined parts?

A: Both are austenitic stainless steels with excellent corrosion resistance. 316L adds 2–3% molybdenum, which gives it significantly better resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion — making it the preferred choice for marine, chemical, pharmaceutical, and food-grade applications. 304 is lower cost and adequate for most general-purpose applications not exposed to chlorides or strong acids.

Q3: What surface finish standard do you use for food-grade stainless parts?

A: For food and pharmaceutical applications we electropolish to Ra ≤0.4 µm (16 µin) and passivate per ASTM A967 / ASTM A380. We comply with 3-A Sanitary Standards and ASME BPE finishing requirements. Material certification (316L with low carbon) and full traceability to mill certs are standard for these applications.

Q4: Can you machine 17-4PH stainless steel parts?

A: Yes. We machine 17-4PH in Condition A (solution annealed) and can arrange for post-machining age hardening (H900, H1025, H1075 etc.) through our certified heat treatment sub-contractor. 17-4PH is commonly specified for high-strength shafts, valve stems, and aerospace structural parts.
