CZ132 DZR Brass · CW602N Dezincification-Resistant Brass · CuZn36Pb2As · CZ132 Machined Fittings & Components

CZ132 — designated CW602N and named CuZn36Pb2As in Europe — is the classic dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass used throughout the plumbing industry for fittings that must survive aggressive, chlorinated or soft waters. A small, controlled addition of arsenic (about 0.02–0.15%) inhibits the selective leaching of zinc that would otherwise weaken ordinary brass, while about 2% lead keeps the alloy readily machinable. This guide covers its full chemistry, mechanical and physical properties, standard sizes, typical components and the industries it serves — plus a built-in round & hex bar weight calculator.

CZ132 / CW602N Dezincification-Resistant (DZR) Brass Rods, Parts and Components
CZ132 (CW602N / CuZn36Pb2As) arsenical DZR brass round and hex rod — the standard feedstock for plumbing fittings used in aggressive and chlorinated waters.

What Is CZ132 DZR Brass?

CZ132 is an arsenical, leaded alpha brass whose defining property is resistance to dezincification — the corrosion mechanism in which zinc is selectively leached out of brass, leaving a weak, porous copper skeleton. A carefully controlled arsenic addition suppresses that mechanism, so CZ132 keeps its strength and pressure integrity in waters where standard brass would fail. It retains about 2% lead for good machinability, and it is supplied in the DZR-heat-treated condition that qualifies it to the ISO 6509-1 dezincification test. It carries the UK designation CZ132, the EN number CW602N, the name CuZn36Pb2As, and the nearest UNS grade C35330. It is the default material for water fittings, valves and manifolds in DZR-mandated regions.

Machinability & Fabrication

CZ132 machines well — around 65% of the free-cutting benchmark — thanks to its retained lead, and it turns, drills, taps and threads cleanly on CNC and Swiss-type machines. Crucially it must be supplied and processed so that its DZR heat treatment is preserved: the dezincification resistance comes from the correct microstructure, so heat during forging and any subsequent annealing are controlled. It hot-forges and hot-stamps at 650–750 °C to make the bulk of plumbing fittings, and accepts nickel and chrome plating for visible hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CZ132 brass?
CZ132 is a dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass — an arsenical, leaded alpha brass of about 62% copper, 35.5% zinc, 2% lead and a small arsenic addition. It is designated CW602N / CuZn36Pb2As in Europe and is the standard material for durable plumbing fittings.
What does dezincification-resistant (DZR) mean?
Dezincification is a corrosion process in which zinc is selectively leached out of brass, leaving a weak, porous copper structure that can leak or fail. A DZR brass like CZ132 is alloyed and heat-treated to resist this, keeping its strength in aggressive waters.
How does CZ132 resist dezincification?
A controlled addition of arsenic (about 0.02–0.15%) inhibits the selective loss of zinc, and the alloy is supplied in a special DZR heat-treated condition that gives the right microstructure. Together these qualify it to the ISO 6509-1 test.
Is CZ132 the same as CW602N?
Yes. CZ132 is the legacy UK/BS designation and CW602N is the current European number for the same alloy, CuZn36Pb2As. The nearest US grade is C35330.
What is the density of CZ132?
8.44 g/cm³ (8,440 kg/m³). The weight calculator above uses this value.
Is CZ132 lead-free?
No. CZ132 retains about 2% lead for machinability, so it is a leaded DZR brass. Where both lead-free and dezincification resistance are required, a silicon brass such as C69300 (Eco Brass) is the usual choice.
What is the machinability of CZ132?
Around 65% of the C36000 free-cutting benchmark. The retained lead lets it turn, drill and thread cleanly on standard CNC and Swiss machines.
What is the tensile strength of CZ132?
Typically 400–500 MPa, with proof stress from about 150 to 350 MPa and elongation of 20–32%, in the DZR-conditioned state.
Where is CZ132 used?
In water fittings, DZR valves, compression fittings, manifolds, ball-valve parts, tap and mixer components and other plumbing hardware — especially in regions or waters where DZR brass is mandated.
Why is DZR brass required in some regions?
Many countries and water authorities require DZR brass for buried and potable-water fittings because soft, acidic or chlorinated waters cause standard brass to dezincify and fail. DZR grades like CZ132 are specified to prevent this.
Can CZ132 be forged?
Yes. It hot-forges and hot-stamps at 650–750 °C to make most plumbing fittings; forging and annealing are controlled so the DZR condition is preserved in the finished part.
What is the melting range of CZ132?
Approximately 880–900 °C. Hot working is done around 650–750 °C.
Can CZ132 be plated?
Yes. It accepts nickel and chrome plating, common on visible taps, valves and decorative plumbing fittings.
How does CZ132 compare with C27450 and C69300?
All three resist dezincification. CZ132 is a leaded DZR brass with the best machinability; C27450 is a lead-free (NSF 372) DZR brass; C69300 (Eco Brass) is lead-free, DZR and much stronger, but costs more. The right choice depends on whether lead-free status, top machinability or maximum strength matters most.
What sizes does Brass Parts India supply in CZ132?
Round bar 3–110 mm, hex 3–70 mm across flats, square up to 55 mm, plus hollow rod, wire and forging stock, all in the DZR-conditioned state. Custom sizes to drawing.
How do I calculate the weight of a CZ132 bar?
Use the calculator above, or multiply cross-sectional area by length by density (8.44 g/cm³). Round area = π/4 × d²; hex area = (√3/2) × (across-flats)².
Can Brass Parts India supply CZ132 parts with DZR certification?
Yes. We provide finished CZ132 / CW602N components with chemical and mechanical certificates and ISO 6509-1 dezincification-test documentation for export.
